Exercise and the brain

Exercise isn't for the body. It's for the head.

Spark · by John Ratey

A Harvard psychiatrist explains why moving is the closest thing there is to a drug for attention and mood.

Why read it

Ratey starts at a high school that moved PE to first period and watched grades climb. From there he dismantles the idea that exercise is cosmetic: when you move, the brain releases growth factors that prime neurons to learn. Muscle is the side effect; the brain is the organ that benefits most.
